Then come home and tell your wife that it was a sin of weakness, not of malice. Let me know how it goes. IF THIS DOESN'T RING SOME ALARM BELLS ........ My wife knows to wake me up if some sort of a breaking news story appears on television after I've gone to bed. Last night the story was from Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport. At the bottom of Channel 2's screen the word "terrorists" appeared. That's all I needed to stay glued to the screen for the next hour or so. The story? Well, it seems that a Delta Airlines MD-11 was loaded with about 260 passengers and getting ready to make its 12 hour flight to Istanbul, Turkey. Suddenly the airplane is swarming with Atlanta police. They take all of the passengers out of one row of the aircraft and remove them. One of the passengers is handcuffed and hauled off somewhere. The six other passengers are questioned about their travel plans, where they live, who they know, and released. The remainder of the passengers were removed from the plane. The flight finally did depart for Turkey, but only after a three-hour plus delay during which the airplane was fully searched. Each passenger was required to identify his or her luggage and the luggage was also searched. Last night airport authorities and the FBI were saying that it was a national security matter. This morning Channel 2 was reporting that there had been a "real emergency." Wow! They must have really be on to something here. So --- just what was this grave threat to national security? What was the "real emergency?" Sit down, because this really is frightening. That man that the FBI handcuffed and hauled off? It's all his fault. He, evidently, was the threat to national security. He was the cause of the "real emergency." And just what did he do? He paid for his ticket in cash. Yup, that's right. CNN reported that they had been informed by a national security source in Washington that the plane was emptied and searched, and the passenger was handcuffed and detained "because of the suspicious nature in which he purchased his ticket," namely by paying cash. The guy pays for a ticket in cash and we get a major terrorist alert? A threat to national security, a possible terrorist because he pays for a ticket with cash? O.K. I have no qualms with heightened security around commercial air flights, but there is something very disquieting about all this, and I do have a bit of a question as to whether or not the TRUE concern was over terrorism, or drugs. Just think, folks. We have come to the point in this country where you are viewed as a threat to our national security and a possible terrorist just because you use lawful U.S. currency to buy an airline ticket. Just what type of society are we becoming? I firmly believe that the statists are steadily and patiently moving us toward a cashless society. A society where every financial transaction you enter into can be instantly tracked and archived by the almighty government. If George Orwell had had any idea of the capabilities of high-speed computers in the last years of the 20th Century he would have written "1984" in an entirely different way. The government doesn't need television cameras on every corner to track us --- it just needs the ability to track our financial transactions and electronic communications. Think about it. As cash disappears from our society - as you are forced more and more to rely on electronic transfers - your privacy and your freedom will gradually disappear. The government would have a record of every book you buy, every movie you rent, and every drink you take at your local watering hole. "Alert! Cranston Snord in Wahoo, Nebraska just bought a package of condoms at the 7-Eleven with his credit card. Our records show he's been married for 23 years. The electronic sensor on his car indicates he's driving South on 2nd Street. Send a car to trail him to see if he's going to meet a prostitute!" Let's just do a brief review of some of the laws that have been proposed in the past 12 months .. all of which are designed to give the government new access to every corner of your financial life. The Know Your Customer Program. This one was killed essentially by talk radio. The people of this country absolutely flooded lawmakers with objections and the program was withdrawn --- or so we were told. Under this program all banks, credit unions, S&Ls and other financial institutions would be required to draw up a profile on all customers - all people with savings accounts, checking accounts, brokerage accounts. The profile would include a great deal of information about your lifestyle, both personal and financial. What kind of deposits you make. Where your money comes from. Where you spend it. How you spend it. Then computers would watch your account to see if you deviate from your normal course of conduct. If you do, the financial institution would be required to notify federal law enforcement agencies so they could launch an investigation if they saw fit. Georgia Senator Max Cleland's Bill. This one was introduced in the United States Senate by Georgia Senator Max Cleland. It's still pending. Briefly stated, under the provisions of this bill if you were found in certain areas carrying $10,000 or more in cash the police would be allowed to simply seize that cash. That's right. Just take it. They wouldn't have to arrest you. They wouldn't have to charge you with a crime. They wouldn't have to get a warrant. They wouldn't have to get any order from a judge. They could just take the money. Period. End of story. The only >limitation is that you would have to be found with this illegal amount of cash in an area that law enforcement considers to be a route for drug trafficking. That would include any airport or any Interstate highway. So, let's say you have a car you want to sell. You're in Atlanta. The buyer is in Charlotte. You drive the car to Charlotte. The buyer tries to write you a $12,000 check. You are smart enough to say "no way, I want cash." So, the man goes to his bank and comes back with 120 one-hundred dollar bills. You put the bills in your pocket and hop a flight back to Atlanta. You pay for the flight with one of the bills. The agent gets suspicious. The police search you, find the remaining $11,900 and just take it! You are free to go, but without your money. If you want it back you are going to have to hire a lawyer and sue the government. If you can't find that man who bought your car, you're SOL. Good luck. Clinton's FIDNET. This one was announced just a few weeks ago. It's Bill Clinton's idea for a massive computer system that will tap into and keep track of all computer networks, both government and in the area of private finance, in the U.S. The excuse for the system is to protect these computer networks from e-terrorism. The reality is that the government would have access to your checking records, your ATM transactions, your credit card transactions --- virtually any financial transaction you make that involves a bank or brokerage computer. Quite a few elected officials voiced some strong opposition to this and the Clintonistas say they are backing off. I don't believe it. Wireless communications. You do know that the government can eavesdrop on your telephone calls - both land line and wireless - pretty much when they want, don't you? Well ... how about this. There are some wireless communications companies that are trying to get licenses to operate in the United States. Trouble is, these companies use satellite systems based in Canada. The FBI is blocking these licenses because they won't be able to monitor the phone calls effectively. Think about it. I just don't understand why Americans aren't more upset and concerned about the steady decrease in privacy and growth in government power. We are truly getting just what we deserve. HEY! THE SECRETARY OF STATE WANTS SOME ATTENTION HERE! I see that Georgia Secretary of State Cathy Cox wants to review the day-trading records of Mark Barton. Why? What's the point? Is she thinking of thrusting herself into the news by proposing some regulations on day-trading? Starving for a little news coverage, Madam Secretary? HERE'S ANOTHER SIDE TO THE STORY There's an Associated Press story out this morning saying that we spend $2.3 billion dollars a year to treat gunshot wounds. The figures come from a group that has been on an anti-gun tear for quite some time, the American Medical Association. O.K. So the taxpayers are footing a good bit of the bill for treating gunshot wounds. Now, here's what that story doesn't tell you. According the the Kleck-Gertz study published in The Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology, an American gun owner uses a gun every 13 seconds in defense against a criminal --- in defense of life or property. Now, just how much money is saved by these defensive uses of a gun? Nope, they don't want to give you that figure, do they? QUESTION OF THE DAY A new Centers for Disease Control report shows that youth violence is on the decline. So why is Congress so hot to pass all sorts of juvenilejustice legislation? http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/national/longterm/juvmurders/juvm urders.htm MORE ON THE TAX CUT DEBATE You do realize, don't you, that Bill Clinton has proposals on the table to spend every last penny of that phony so-called "budget surplus." He is ranting about how the nation will go deeper in debt if the Republicans get the tax cut they want, yet our national debt would increase more under his surplus spending proposals than it would under the Republican tax cut proposals. Funny how the mainstream press doesn't tell you this. A recent column by Tony Snow contains information on a university study of government budgets since 1789. That would be a bunch of government budgets. Here's what was found: In years when governments run a budget surplus 74 cents out of each surplus dollar will be used for new government spending; 21 cents will be used for debt reduction and 5 cents will be used for tax cuts. As Tony Snow said, "the only reason we have a budget surplus today is because politicians didn't expect it. STUPID, STUPID AMERICANS I've mentioned this once before: The Fox News poll which showed that 50 percent of Americans --- that's right, 50 percent --- think that the federal government has money of its own to spend on things; money that doesn't come from taxes. Think about it. That's 50 percent of Americans who can be absolutely counted on to vote for the politician with the big spending plans. As Walter Williams pointed out in a recent column --- this is the product of our wonderful government education system. Our government schools are turning out people who aren't smart enough to understand that the government is stealing them blind. Quite a scam. OK. That's enough, dammit. I'm not going to put up with this any longer. I want to know just which one of you perverts out there threw bleach on my chia pet. You can e-mail me -- but only while I am actually doing the show live from 8:30 to 12:00 noon EDT at No attached or large files please wsboortz@yahoo.com Now that you've peeked at my program notes, maybe you should call your local talk station and tell them you want them to carry Boortz! Tell them to call Cox Syndication at 404-962-2087 and speak to Paul Douglas. He'll send the information right over! If they don't call, their competitor will!
